Highway to Heaven

Arches National Park is well known for its distinctive arches. However, another feature is noticeable throughout the park in several locations: the La Sal Mountains (or La Sal Range). The mountain range is located along the Utah/Colorado border. Mount Peale, reaching 12,721 feet (3,877 m), marks the highest elevation in the range.

This particular shot was made while hiking the Devil’s Garden trail. The trail is arguably the most fascinating and picturesque in the park. Not only can you see several famous arches along the trail, such as Landscape Arch, but a hiker must also walk on slick rock, such as the one in the photo. On this day, the wind was very strong in this area. We had to sit down in a couple of places for safety reasons. Hikers need to be very aware of the trail and cairns. Sometimes, it’s not entirely obvious where the trail is going, although in the case of the photo, we knew there was no other way to go but forward.

You will reach the Double O Arch if you hike the entire Devil’s Garden trail. The hike is 4.1 miles (6.6 km) roundtrip if you stay on the main trail. Our hike, however, was about 7.5 miles (12 km) long because we took some side trails to explore the area and see all the other arches along the trail. During the hike, you walk on a lot of slick rock with narrow ledges and steep drop-offs. Caution must always be observed, and the trail is not recommended if there has been rain or icy conditions.

I don’t think I would tackle that trail, even the shorter length, so it’s great to be able to see these views through your lens 🙂
