— The Taos Pueblo became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, and it is also a National Historic Landmark. It is the only Native American living community that enjoys this honor. It has been home to Native Americans for more than 700 years, and some ancient ruins found in the Taos Valley seem to indicate that people lived here 1,000 years ago. The buildings we see in these two photos were built approximately between 1000 and 1450 A.D. Today, there are approximately 150 people living full-time there. Most of the inhabitants in the pueblo are Roman Catholics, and they also celebrate traditional religious rituals passed down from their ancestors. If you can be there during one of such ceremonies, don’t miss it. You will not be able to photograph it, but you will be glad you were there. We were fortunate enough to see such celebrations the first time we were in Taos Pueblo in 2010.
