— The Church of the Company (La Iglesia de la Compañía) is a Peruvian baroque treasure in the mestizo architectural style in the city of Arequipa. The church is also known as the church of the Jesuits. After the 1698 earthquake, this façade was rebuilt to what it is today. Construction of the church itself started in 1590. The small church is located not very far from Arequipa’s cathedral, right in the center of the historical plaza. Inside you will find carved wooden altarpieces covered with gold leaf. As it is traditional in Arequipa, white rocks from the city’s volcanoes were used in the building construction. Because the rocks are very porous, the relief work was not carved in the stone. As seen in the photo above, the main façade has the noticeable relief of the surface and not in depth.
