— Balcones Canyonlands NWR is a place full of surprises. In my most recent time spent at the refuge, I enjoyed a very tranquil and easy hike along the Creek Trail. That is the easiest of all trails in the park and also arguably the most scenic. When you luck out to be there without other people around, you can really fine tune your ears to the sounds of birds around you and the creek running along the trail.
This was the scene on January 1, 2021. I had the trail all to myself in spite of the fact that there were several cars in the parking lot. The morning was getting late. The sun was filtering some of its rays through the canopy along the trail. There were still signs of late fall foliage. Further in the distance, the tall grass was swaying with the calm winds that morning. It was all very peaceful. From time to time I would have a glimpse of the Rock Rim trail with its higher elevation.
