I have been taking more time to bike with this mild spring weather. As always, I bring my camera with me in my backpack. One never knows what one will see. This week was no exception for surprises. I spotted many new wildflowers and busy pollinators on a new mountain biking trail at the Brushy Creek Regional Trail. The opening shot surprised me because of the large number of scarabs in a White prickly poppy flower. They were covered in pollen.
Another welcome surprise was seeing Horsemint for the first time this year. The flower turns from green to a purplish-pink color before drying up. They stand out on a field, even when there are several Firewheels (or Indian blankets) around them. This lone flower was along my Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park bike trail.
Another pollinator I saw in several areas around that trail was the Orange sulphur butterfly. They move quickly from flower to flower, but sometimes, they’ll take a break just long enough for a decent photo. This photo was captured near the same location as the previous image.
Like the Horsemint I showed above, the Mexican hat or Prairie coneflower was my first sighting this season, too. This was much farther down the trail and worth another stop for some images.
This last image was near the point at Balcones District Park, where I take a break. The Prickly Pear cactus blooms were very dense. Upon closer inspection, I noticed some bee activity.
