— Going back several years ago, one of our most memorable trips was when we visited El Salvador in 2008. One of our closest friends, a native of that country, prepared the entire itinerary and led us to an unforgettable visit. After spending a few days in the capital sightseeing, we drove to the coast to spend a few days there. Our destination was La Libertad.
The short trip to the coast was approximately 45 minutes. As with other parts of the country, the beauty before our eyes was wonderful. A lush countryside was around every curve. When we got to the beach, it was yet another surprise. Having grown up on the northeast coast of Fortaleza, Brazil, I was used to white sandy beaches. Was I in for a surprise! If you want to experience a bit of the scenery, simply click these photos below to see it all.
La Libertad area is volcanic in origin. The beaches are nearly all covered with black rocks. It is a beautiful sight to see. Another thing you will notice when you are there is a large number of surfers. The waves on El Sunzal beach are world famous among surfers. We spent several hours sitting on our hotel balcony simply watching the action. A trip around the area also leads to more beautiful spots, such as the boardwalk near this restaurant where we stopped for lunch one day.
