— The Mosteiro de São Vicente de Fora (Monastery of St. Vincent Outside the Walls) is one of the most important historical buildings in Lisbon. When we visited it, our primary intent was to see the Bragança pantheon where the last Portuguese dynasty lies. The original monastery was built in the 12th century, and it has received several changes throughout the years. However, as soon as you enter the building, the original cistern is still there in its original form. The number of 16th century azulejos (Portuguese blue tiles) throughout the monastery is quite impressive. There is even a special collection with several of LaFontaine’s fables depicted all in large azulejos panels. Also from the top of the building one can see the Rio Tejo (Tagus River) and the National Pantheon honoring famous Portuguese names, from kings to writers and singers. From the top of this building, the view of Lisbon is also captivating.
