Pedernales River

Pedernales River

–A tributary of the Colorado River in Central Texas, the Pedernales River is approximately 106 miles (171 km) long. The river goes through Pedernales Falls State Park, east of Johnson City. Like most rivers in the Hill Country area, the Pedernales is prone to flash floods very frequently. In fact, at the park overlook area, there are a couple of shots displaying how quickly the waters can rise in that area. In fact, there are sirens in the park to warn customers to evacuate immediately whenever flash floods occur. The shot above was taken upstream from the more popular area with some more pronounced waterfalls and swimming area. This is a less frequented area of the river that can be reached by hiking to the Duck Pond. I did that in February 2019 and was lucky to capture this beautiful sunset. Part of the trail here is pretty much just walking along the boulders on the shore. As always caution is required here. In fact, that afternoon my friend and I witnessed a rescue mission in the falls more popular area. Someone had slipped on the rocks and needed to be lifted by helicopter and taken to a hospital.
