— Rocca Maggiore is an old fortress built around 1360 in the beautiful city of Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis, in Italy. If the castle looks familiar to you, it is likely because it was used in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1972 movie Brother Sun, Sister Moon. The castle overlooks the city of Assisi and offers magnificent views of the Umbria region. This castle is above the city of Assisi. We first toured it during the day (photo below). At night the castle illumination provides a different feel of it. You can hike to the castle entrance, and it’s not a difficult hike. The castle walls are still intact.
