— My most recent visit to Palo Duro Canyon State Park was in Fall 2014. After a few days at nearby Caprock Canyons State Park, we proceeded to Palo Duro Canyon to enjoy the country’s second largest canyon and its impressive colorful formations. At that time, the Rock Garden Trail had just been completed a couple of years earlier. The ranger had told us to make sure we check out that new trail. The trail is only 2.39 miles (one way), and it climbs 600 ft to take hikers and bikers to the top of the rim. It is considered difficult for a lot of people most likely because of the rough terrain at the trail start and some 20 switchbacks. However, the views on this trail are breathtaking and give users almost a complete view of the canyon. Once you reach the top of the mesa, the trail is easy and flat.
