— Dedicated on September 11, 2003, the 9/11 Memorial at the Texas State Cemetery (Austin) is a tribute honoring those Texans who died in the terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC, on September 11, 2001. The final design was created by O’Connell, Robertson and Associates of Austin. The monument is open for the public to touch and feel the original steel beams recovered in the state in which they stand. The walls surrounding the steel beams are made of Texas pink granite. Inside the open circle, there are small benches and plaques with the times each attack took place on that September 11, 2001. Right at the memorial entrance, the dedication written by then Governor Rick Perry reads: “Texans have answered the tragedy of September 11 with courage, sacrifice and love. The freedom we cherish is a precious commodity, purchased at a great price.“
