— It is improbable that you will be at Big Bend NP and have nothing to do. However, if you want to wind down a busy day you had at the park, take a drive along the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive or down Panther Junction Road towards Boquillas, Mexico. There will be plenty of scenery as the sun sets over the park.
As I mentioned in another post about this enormous park — it covers 1,252 square miles (3,243 square km) or 801,163 acres — the Chisos Mountains are the only mountain range contained entirely within a national park boundary. This mountain range covers 40 square miles (104 square km) and is the southernmost mountain range in the lower forty-eight states. Among the many features this range has, it includes vegetation going from Douglas fir, Aspen, Arizona cypress, Maple, and Ponderosa pines to Madrones.
At the end of the day, when sunset is near, the view of the Chisos glisten in contrast with the Chihuahuan Desert. The mountains sometimes appear bright orange and aglow.
