Driving around Palo Duro Canyon SP and also from various trails in the park, Capitol Peak (elevation 3,158 feet, 963 meters) cannot be missed. The above photo was captured at the beginning of the Lighthouse trail. The trail, a little under six miles (9.5 km), goes around Capitol Peak and provides the hiker with different views of this mountain, including its back. In some sections of the trail, one can see almost a wafer-thin edge of this peak. Erosion has created some steep pedestals, such as the hoodoo seen on the left side of this shot. This is not the highest peak in the park, but its looks certainly attract everyone who sees it. That conical shape is one of the reasons. Also, if you take a hike to the top of Capitol Peak, you will be rewarded with amazing views of the park. Below, you have a view of the peak from the other side.
See if you can spot the hiker in the next shot. It should give you an idea of how expansive this area is.

Thanks, Sarah. I probably should have said he was wearing a blue jacket. 🙂
