Feeling Small: The Majesty of Goat Mountain

This is Goat Mountain, and it can be seen if you take the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive in Big Bend NP. When I captured this image in 2018, I thought those big clouds added a lot of emotion to the landscape. In my eyes, I also envisioned I would make this a black-and-white edit. I looked at it in color, but what you see above is the expression I wanted for this impressive mountain.

Goat Mountain is a volcanic peak with an altitude of 4,625 ft (1,410 m). It is part of the Sierra Quemada in the southern Chisos Mountains. In the same way that Ernst Tinaja is a playground for geologists, so is Goat Mountain. As you can easily see, the mountain is V-shaped. It was formed some 35 million years ago. A sign on the pullout area briefly explains the “fiery explosions and massive volcanic domes” that helped shape many of the formations along the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive.
