Goliad State Park & Historic Site

Goliad SP

— Although the photos featured here were made in 2011, the beauty of this state park and historic site are beckoning me for a return visit. When I visited this park, I was returning from a long camping trip at Goose Island SP. I was just running with some extra time and noticed the beautiful wildflowers on the hill as I was passing this site. I decided to turn around and stop by for a quick visit. That was a good decision. This Spanish colonial-era mission was restored to its splendor in the 1930s under the guidance of the Civilian Conservation Corps. The original church was the Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zuñiga, and it was built in 1722 near Matagorda Bay. It was only in 1749 that that the church moved the mission to its present location. The photos here are of Our Lady of Loreto Chapel in the park grounds.
