— Is this what the Mars Rover saw? Whether it is a daytime scene, sunset view, or night skies, you can be sure you will always be amazed at the beauty before your eyes at Davis Mountains. Previously known as Limpia Mountains, the Davis Mountains present an unusual landscape because of their irregular formations. Instead of your traditional, continuous mountain range, these mountains are a collection of peaks and flat areas with Mount Livermore marking its highest point at 8,383 ft (2,555 m). When the sun is setting, the varied hues put on a unique show of light and shadow, creating an otherworldly landscape, such as the photo above. Because of the mountain’s location surrounded by desert, this is called a sky island. In addition to the Fort Davis Site Historical Site and the Davis Mountains State Park in the area, there is also the Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountains Preserve. The shot shown here was taken from the top of Skyline Drive in the Davis Mountains State Park.
