— Lower Cataract Lake is a beautiful lake located in the Eagles Nest Wilderness section of the White River National Forest in Colorado. The lake is about 40 minutes northwest of Silverthorne. We visited this lake and its trail in the summer of 2022.
The trail to Lower Cataract Lake is a moderate 2.3-mile (3.7-km) loop that passes through meadows and forests. In the summertime, there is an abundance of wildflowers along the trail. The lake itself is surrounded by towering peaks, such as Mount Powell, Mount Edwards, and Mount Audubon, and offers stunning views of the surrounding wilderness. Naturally, the lake gets its name from the Lower Cataract, and you will get views of the cataract from several points along the trail. Getting to the trailhead will require driving a dirt road. That road is generally in good condition.
The week of July 10-16, 2023 (the second full week in July) marks the celebration of National Forest Week.

It looks marvellous – but an unfortunate name here in England, as its original meaning of waterfall has largely been superseded as the term given to a clouding of the lens of the eye. Your lake and its environs look wonderful places to explore.

Margaret, thank you for your feedback, as always. Yes, “cataract” is a term I often hear with eye problems, such as what I have started to develop. I already had cataracts removed on my left eye, but the right eye is stubborn and not ready yet. Maybe I’ll need to revisit that in a couple of years. Thanks again.

Good luck with the (medical) cataracts.
