Pulpit Rock Overlook

— Here’s another overlook at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP: Pulpit Overlook. This is a very distinctive area in the canyon. A visitor can clearly see the erosion results on the north and south sides of the canyon. Looking at this photo, you have the south side of the canyon on your right. The erosion goes back farther on the south side than on the north side. Because the south rim of the canyon does not get as much sun as the north rim, it does not dry as quickly as the north rim. That moisture found on the south rim is a factor in its faster erosion. More moisture means faster erosion. As a sign at the overlook states, it took “about 2 million years to shape the canyon” as we see it on the photo above. As in other shots of the canyon, you can see the Gunnison River way at the bottom of the canyon.
