Revisiting Caprock Canyons SP

Sunset at Caprock Canyons State Park

— After six and a half long years, we finally spent a few days revisiting one of the most scenic state parks in Texas: Caprock Canyons SP. Located towards the Texas panhandle, Caprock Canyons SP is known for its rock fins, prairie dogs, and the Texas bison herd.

Although it is a seven-hour drive from Austin, we arrived at the park with ample time to do the scenic drive and capture some of the magic the park offers. Of course, first and foremost in my mind for this trip was to capture several photos of the Texas bison herd. Hopefully, I would be lucky to see some of the calves that had been born in the spring. The time was just right.

The shot above is right after one passes the visitor center. The narrow road goes over Lake Theo and offers dramatic views at sunset time. It is also where one can be uncomfortably close to some bison grazing in the area and crossing the road. We just prayed they didn’t mind sharing the road with our vehicle. Living peacefully along with the bison, the prairie dogs let their presence be known and heard very easily. Also along the road, one can stop and marvel at the canyon walls at sunset time. Here is a sample of the photos and video I made on that very first evening at the park.
