Time for a Delightful Diversion

You may think you’ve reached the wrong post. Yes, this is a departure from my nature photos. However, looking at my Categories page, you will see that “sports” is there. When the Circuit of the Americas had its inaugural race in 2012, I was ecstatic that I would be able to attend Formula 1 events right here in Austin, Texas. That has grown beyond that. I go to several races there every year (MotoGP, SVRA, etc.), and I also enjoy the bike nights when I can ride my bicycle on the same track where world champions race their cars and motorcycles.

This was the weekend of the 2024 MotoGP Americas. I photographed everything that sparked my imagination and also experimented with long exposures. Racing events beg for that, don’t you think? The photo above shows South African Darryn Binder on Turn 15, right in front of my seat. I was at a focal length of 107.5 mm, ISO 125, and 1/60 sec at f/11. It was just the right combination to freeze the motorcycle and blur the background.

Wow!! Amazing shot, Egidio! I had tried before, but not car racing, I know how difficult it is.

Thanks so much, Amy. Yes, I have been trying for several years. Every time I go to races, I try. Sometimes the results work out well, as in this photo.

    Excellent photo!

  4. It’s an incredible experience! Racing events do indeed offer fantastic opportunities for photography, especially with the fast-paced action and dynamic movements of the vehicles.
Your photo of Darryn Binder captures the excitement and speed of MotoGP perfectly.
It must have been thrilling to be so close to the action!

A great shot of an event I’m thoroughly relieved to have been nowhere near! Lucky we’re all different!

That is amazing Egidio, I mean that from someone who has done this sort of photography and knows how hard it is to pan and get amazing images. Brilliant.

Leanne, your feedback is very reassuring. I have tried to get that type of image often and do not succeed most of the time. Yesterday was a good day. 🙂 The racer’s speed and my panning were in good sync. Thank you.
