— January 9, 2018, marked the 110th anniversary of Muir Woods National Monument, established by President Theodore Roosevelt. The land was donated by William Kent, who requested the park be named after the famous conservationist John Muir. As I noted in a previous post here, being among these giant trees is a most humbling experience. Most of these redwoods are between 500 and 800 years old. Some redwoods can grow up to 380 feet (115 m), but the tallest tree in Muir Woods NM is 258 feet (79 m). Muir Woods NM is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is only 11 miles north of the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco, California.
