Water and Peace

Today, on March 22nd, we celebrate World Water Day! It’s a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of freshwater and inspiring action to address the global water crisis. The United Nations leads this initiative, emphasizing the need for sustainable water management and highlighting that billions of people still lack access to safe water. This year’s theme, “Water for Peace,” underscores water’s role in fostering cooperation and building a more stable future. From the UN’s website:

More than 3 billion people worldwide depend on water that crosses national borders. Yet, only 24 countries have cooperation agreements for all their shared water.

I captured this photo this afternoon while biking on the Brushy Creek Regional Trail in Austin. The trail is mainly paved with a few gravel sections. There are some challenging mountain biking sections, but mostly, the trail goes along Brushy Creek. In the photo above, you can see a section of the trail right above the waterfall. Although I do not carry a tripod when I bike, I sat on the ground and rested my camera on my knees. That allowed me to shoot using a shutter speed of 1/8 seconds.

If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water.

I hadn’t heard of this day but it’s an excellent idea to celebrate everything water does for this planet. Great waterfall shot!

Thanks, Leanne. It pays to have my camera when I bike. I’d seen that waterfall many times, but sometimes it is just trickling. Even without a tripod, I was able to rest the camera on my knees and use a very low shutter speed (1/8 sec).
