World Oceans Day

Sunset at the beach in Fortaleza, Brazil

— On June 8 we celebrate World Oceans Day. The United Nations (UN) proclaimed this year’s theme as “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods.” To call attention to what covers 70% of the planet is evident in present times. Sometimes people forget that 50% of the oxygen produced on Earth comes from the ocean. The UN states that the ocean “is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world.” With those facts at hand, one has to wonder why more is not being done to protect such valuable resources.

The photo above was made in 2018. We were staying at a beach condo just outside Fortaleza, in the northeast of Brazil. Because it was during the week, we were able to enjoy peaceful and beautiful sunsets such as the photo above shows. There were very few people in the same complex. This area is just minutes from the Beach Park water park. Although very popular on weekends, during the week Beach Park is even more enjoyable without the crowds.
