— A lot of photos are taken showing the Santa Elena Canyon and its massive walls as one approaches the canyon. It is, after all, an iconic scene from Big Bend NP. On the other hand, the view from inside the canyon and looking out is just as impressive. It provides a magnificent view of the multi-layered tower of Castolon, not to mention the majestic view of the Chisos Mountains. The Santa Elena Canyon trail is an easy hike into the canyon, and it offers peaceful moments, if you get there at the right time. When one reaches the top of the trail and looks back, the view above is what one will see. It is sight worth lingering on and appreciating the beauty before one’s eyes. Of course, the land on the right side of the photo above is in Mexico.
