Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte

Outside church view

— Braga is the largest city in the northern Portuguese region of Minho. Although not a heavily visited destination in Portugal, the city is known as the oldest Portuguese city. One of the many attractions the city has is Igreja do Bom Jesus do Monte, sitting high on a mountain overlooking the city. Its beautiful Baroque stairway architecture and stunning views are a must for any visitor who comes to Braga.

Altar with Crucifixion center piece

Bom Jesus do Monte was built in the 18th century. It was designed by the architect Carlos Amarante in the Neoclassic design and took over 50 years to complete. The exterior of the church is decorated with intricate carvings and statues, and the interior is just as impressive. The church is home to a number of beautiful paintings and sculptures, and the altar is particularly striking. It is an impressive depiction of the crucifixion.

As I previously mentioned, the church is located on a hilltop and offers stunning views of the city below. The church is also home to a number of gardens and terraces, which are a popular spot for picnics and relaxation. If you decide to walk up to the church, please keep in mind you will need to climb over 600 steps.

This sanctuary is a notable example of a Christian pilgrimage site with a monumental, Baroque stairway that climbs 381 feet (116 meters). The Baroque stairway has a zigzag shape. It has multiple levels and is dedicated to the five senses (sight, smell, hearing, touch, taste) or the three theological virtues (faith, hope, and charity). Each of those levels has its separate fountain. If you go from the bottom to the top of the stairway, you will reach the church and several chapels, as well as lush gardens, flower beds, and benches. Our tour, however, started at the church and allowed us to take the steps down.

The church was elevated to a Minor Basilica status on July 5, 2015, by Pope Francis. On July 7, 2019, the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you are visiting Braga, be sure to add Igreja do Bom Jesus do Monte to your list of things to see. It is a beautiful and impressive church and is sure to leave you with a lasting impression.
