Somerville Moon

Lake Somerville Moon Rise

— Finally after seven months of being unable to go camping, some friends and I spent two nights at the scenic Lake Somerville State Park, Birch Creek Unit. We felt like we had the park to ourselves. In the camping area we selected (Yaupon camping area), there was only a park host at the end of the drive. We spread over three sites for better social distancing. Besides hiking and biking (we rode 7 miles of the Lake Somerville trailway connecting to the other unit of the park (Nails Creek), went swimming at the lake, and marveled at the beauty of the Moon rise on both nights.

Lake Somerville has two separate units, as I highlighted above. Nails Creek is the less scenic of the two. There is a 13-mile trailway that connects both units. A user can hike, bike, or ride horses on that trail. However, the trail is not passable around 7 miles if you use it from the Birch Creek to the Nail Creek units. It’s an easy ride. Furthermore, it offers several kiosks along the trail for resting.

I made the photo above as the sun was setting and the moon was rising. The moon light reflecting on the lake was as beautiful as the setting sun light. We took our chairs and sat by the lake. The only sounds we heard were those of some birds, insects, and the waves hitting the shore.
