Sunrise at The Window

Sunrise at the Window in Big Bend National Park

— Sunsets at the Window in Big Bend NP are an iconic Texas image. Any visitor who comes to the park can easily see a sunset at the Chisos Mountains. All you have to do is be at the lodge during that time. Colors can be very dramatic.

What about sunrises at the Window? If you have an overnight stay at the park, then you should make every effort to see a sunrise at the Window. You don’t really need to hike the trail or get up too early. The views you see here are right from the lodge patio at the restaurant.

I captured the two images only thirty minutes apart. The first is from December 2021 at 7:30 AM. We were on our way to breakfast when I stopped to get the first photo. At 8:00 AM, the sun had broken through the cloud cover and revealed colors and textures in the Chihuahuan Desert way beyond the Window.

The light in the Chisos Mountains is magical. I have captured photos at just about any time of the day. As we were having breakfast that day, we could see the light moving from the desert and passing over Carter Peak (the mountain on the left of your screen) and Vernon Bailey Mountain (on the right side). Those views never tire.
