Balcones District Park

Balcones District Park

— Whenever I bike around Austin‘s Walnut Creek Metropolitan park, I tend to extend my route to include the very scenic Balcones District Park. Although there are several miles of mountain biking trails in Walnut Creek, the paved section that goes between those two parks is only approximately 6.5 miles (10.5 km) roundtrip.

Today’s bike ride was one of those rides that makes me think of spring in Austin. Although there were some initial clouds towards the south, the sun finally came out in big force by the time I was making the trip back to Walnut Creek. This particular section of the trail is an off-shoot of the main trail. Normally I only do this section when I am on my mountain bike. The reason being that this trail is rough here. Lately, though, it seems that the city added some new paved sections there. Even with those new sections, there are still sections where I rode my road bike very carefully and slowly. In spite of some mild rains in the area, the creek you see on the right side of both photos was completely dry. You can compare today’s photos with a previous entry I have here.

Although it is still wintertime in Austin, even with leafless trees, this section of the trail is beautiful. Of course, it helped tremendously that the clouds were putting on a special show. I am hoping that in the spring there’ll be water running on the creek. Just farther ahead, there is a nice pond and waterfall. Today it was bone dry. Incidentally, these two photos were made on my Samsung S10e phone.
