— Big Bend NP is famous for many features. Anyone who visits the park will likely cover highlights that include the Window, the Santa Elena Canyon, Castolon, the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, and other areas in the park. It all depends on how much time you have to spend in the park and also the type of vehicle you’re driving. If you want to experience more remote areas, such as Mariscal Mine, Ernst Tinaja, Grapevine Hills, and others, you will need more than a sedan. The photos here are from the Old Maverick Road, a 14-mile (22.5 km) stretch of an improved dirt road. It connects the Santa Elena Canyon and Maverick Junction, passing by the Terlingua Creek badlands on the west section of the park. Another feature you will see is the Luna’s Jacal hut. As you approach the Rio Grande, the views of the Santa Elena Canyon are amazing. Because this is an improved dirt road, conditions can change depending on how much rain there has been. There are some low water crossing sections. Always check with park personnel to see what the road conditions are. These two shots were taken just a couple of miles after we started driving the road going towards the Rio Grande. You can see how much rain there had been in Big Bend at the time of these photos. We saw a lot of wildflowers and lush areas in late September.
